Saved Layouts

WorkTop saves each desktop's icon positions and restores them when you switch. A saved layout captures a desktop's icon arrangement under a name, so you can restore that exact arrangement at any time. This is useful when your icons get rearranged, for example by a resolution change, and you want to return to a layout you set up carefully.

Opening the layouts list

Each desktop has its own saved layouts.

  1. Open the Manager window (double-click the tray icon, or launch WorkTop from the Start menu).
  2. Find the desktop on the Desktops page.
  3. Click the ··· button on that desktop's card and choose Layouts.

Saving a layout

  1. Type a name in the Name this arrangement field.
  2. Click Save layout.

On the desktop that is currently active, this captures the live icon positions. For a desktop that is not active, WorkTop saves its last-known arrangement instead. Switch to that desktop first if you want to capture its current layout.

Restoring a layout

Click Restore next to a saved layout to move the desktop's icons back to the positions it stores.

You can only restore a layout on the desktop that is currently active. On any other desktop the Restore button is disabled. Switch to the desktop first, then restore.

Undoing a restore

Before every restore, WorkTop saves the desktop's current arrangement as a backup entry named Before last restore, marked with an Auto-backup tag. If a restore is not what you wanted, restore that entry to put the icons back the way they were.

There is one backup per desktop, and WorkTop replaces it each time you restore. You can restore or delete the backup, but you cannot rename it.

Renaming and deleting

  • Rename: click Rename on a saved layout to give it a different name.
  • Delete: click Delete, then Confirm, to remove a layout permanently.

Restoring from the tray

You can restore without opening the Manager. Right-click the tray icon and open the Restore layout submenu. It lists Last active layout (the arrangement WorkTop last saved automatically for the active desktop) followed by any layouts you have saved for that desktop.

This route needs the tray icon. If you have turned it off under Settings, use the Layouts window in the Manager instead.

Good to know

  • Each layout records the monitors it was saved on, shown next to its name (for example, "1 monitor: 2560x1440"). Layouts are monitor-arrangement aware, so they restore to the correct display when your monitor setup changes.
  • Saved layouts are stored on disk with the rest of a desktop's data, so they persist across restarts.
  • Saved layouts are available on every tier, including free.
